EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de Navarre, also known as Marguerite de Angoulême (1492-1549), was a prominent figure in the French Renaissance as the sister of King Francois I and an influential writer and political figure. Marguerite's first marriage was to Charles de Lorraine, Duke of Alençon, in 1515, but the union was annulled in 1521. In 1537, she married Henry II of Navarre, who later became King of Navarre in 1572. Marguerite was known for her literary accomplishments, writing poetry, essays, and novels that explored human emotions and the complexities of love. Her most famous work, "Mémoires de trois princesses," is a collection of stories about three sisters and their experiences in love and politics. Despite being a member of the French royal family, Marguerite was a supporter of the Protestant faith, which was gaining popularity during the Protestant Reformation. Her religious beliefs and political activism made her a controversial figure in the court of her brother, King Francois I. Marguerite used her influence to promote Protestantism and protect Protestant refugees in her duchy of Angoulême. In this portrait, Marguerite is depicted in regal attire, wearing a fur-trimmed robe and a jeweled headdress. Her expression is serious, reflecting the weight of her responsibilities as a queen and a patron of the arts. The portrait underscores Marguerite's significance as a powerful and influential figure in French history, both as a writer and as a political player in the tumultuous world of the French Renaissance.
