Manuel II's Exile: The End of Monarchic Rule in Portugal (1910) This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment when Manuel II, the last king of the Portuguese monarchy, boards a boat to go into exile following the proclamation of the First Portuguese Republic. The image bears witness to the historic events that unfolded on November 5, 1910, marking the end of a monarchy that had lasted for 770 years. Manuel II's reign began in 1908, following the assassination of his father, King Carlos I. However, the political climate in Portugal was fraught with unrest, and the people's discontent with the monarchy grew. The revolution that finally toppled the monarchy was triggered by a series of events, including the assassination of the heir to the throne, Luis Filipe, and the widespread popular discontent with the government's handling of the crisis. On November 5, 1910, the revolution reached its climax, and the republic was proclaimed. Manuel II, who was in Sintra at the time, was given the choice to abdicate or face arrest. He chose to abdicate and, with his family, boarded a British warship, the HMS Dreadnought, to go into exile. The photograph shows Manuel II, dressed in a military uniform, standing on the deck of the boat, bidding farewell to his people as they line the shore, waving and throwing flowers. The image is a poignant reminder of the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Portuguese history. The monarchy, which had ruled Portugal since 1139, was no more, and a new republic had taken its place.
