Born in Scotland in 1746, Keith rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to become a key figure in the naval wars against France during the American Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The painting, executed in the early 19th century, portrays Keith in the uniform of a full admiral, complete with the decorations and insignia of his many honors. His piercing gaze and strong jawline convey a sense of determination and leadership, qualities that served him well in his military career. Keith's naval exploits began in the 1760s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and daring commander. He saw action in the American Revolutionary War, where he commanded the HMS Intrepid and played a key role in the capture of the French fleet at Quiberon Bay in 1759. In the following decades, Keith continued to distinguish himself in battle after battle, including the Battle of Ushant in 1778 and the Battle of the Saintes in 1782.
