Flag Selling, World War One by George Ranstead

A young and pretty flag seller seems to be falling prey to the attentions of a rakish type who isn t in uniform, much to the disapproval of an older, matronly lady. Drawn by George Ranstead, an amateur soldier artist of the Great War, who served in the Army Pay Corps. Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative World War One print, titled 'Flag Selling,' captures a poignant moment in the life of a young flag seller, as she becomes the object of unwanted attention from a non-uniformed man. The scene, drawn by George Ranstead, an amateur soldier artist, transports us back to the front lines of 1916. Ranstead, who served in the Army Pay Corps, was one of many soldiers who took up drawing as a pastime during the war. His work reflects the diverse experiences of the conflict, from wartime humor to poignant images of pretty girls. In this print, the flag seller, with her rosy cheeks and determined expression, stands before a makeshift table piled high with flags. Her patriotic fervor is palpable, as she offers her wares to passersby. However, her focus is disrupted by the advances of a rakish, non-uniformed man, who leans in close, seemingly oblivious to the disapproving glare of an older, matronly lady. The contrast between the youthful innocence of the flag seller and the predatory behavior of the man underscores the complexities of life on the home front during wartime. Ranstead's influence from illustrated magazines of the period is evident in the print's attention to detail and the use of color. The image invites us to reflect on the ways in which civilians contributed to the war effort, from fundraising to selling flags, and the challenges they faced in maintaining morale amidst the chaos of war.
