EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Evelina de Rothschild School for Girls in Jerusalem, a historic institution that opened its doors in 1854. Evelina's untimely death at the young age of 27 deeply affected her father, who assumed the role of sponsor for the first girls' school in Palestine as a tribute to his daughter's memory. The panoramic view showcases the picturesque stone building, nestled amidst the rolling hills and verdant landscape of Jerusalem. The school's serene atmosphere is a testament to the importance of education and the enduring legacy of Evelina and her father. The girls in their traditional attire can be seen engaged in various activities, including studying, playing, and socializing, reflecting the well-rounded curriculum that the school offered. The establishment of the Evelina de Rothschild School for Girls marked a significant milestone in the history of Jewish education in Jerusalem and Israel.
