Elsternwick, a suburban locality in the City of Glen Eira, has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. The area was originally part of the Elstermer Run, a large pastoral holding owned by the Chirnside family. In the late 1880s, the first houses were built, and Elsternwick began to grow as a residential suburb. Glenhuntly Road, the main thoroughfare, was named after Thomas Glenhuntly, a prominent Melbourne businessman and politician. The road was initially a dirt track, but by the early 1900s, it had been paved, as evidenced by the smooth surface of the road in this photograph.
