This striking image captures the momentous event recorded in the Old Testament when King David of Israel seizes the Ark of the Covenant and brings it to Jerusalem, establishing the city as the new capital of his kingdom (circa 1000 BCE). The Ark, a sacred chest that housed the tablets of the Ten Commandments, had been in the possession of the Philistines for a number of years following the defeat of the Israelites in the Battle of Aphek. In this powerful scene, David, dressed in battle armor and wearing a crown, stands before the Ark as it is being carried in a procession through the streets of Jerusalem.
