This striking image captures a pivotal moment in the grim history of rabies, a once-fearsome and often fatal disease transmitted through the saliva of infected animals. The year is 1826, and the scene unfolds on a bustling European street, where the panic and chaos of a rabid dog attack are palpable. At the center of the photograph, a fearsome and unwell canine, its eyes wild with madness, bares its teeth and lunges at a terrified street pedlar. The pedlar, in a desperate attempt to save himself, falls to the ground, his merchandise scattered around him. The women in the background, their faces etched with fear and shock, scramble to find safety, some seeking refuge in nearby doorways or behind walls. Rabies, also known as hydrophobia or canine madness, was a scourge of the 19th century, and attacks by rabid animals were commonplace. The disease was notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat, and once symptoms appeared, it was often fatal. Citizens, fearful of the disease, would often take matters into their own hands, forming mobs to hunt down and destroy any suspected rabid animals. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the terror and uncertainty that once gripped communities in the face of rabies.
