EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne of Denmark, Daughter of Frederick II of Denmark and Norway, in an Elaborate Elizabethan Costume adorned with Peacock Feathers (1619). Anne of Denmark, born in 1574, was the daughter of Frederick II of Denmark and Norway, and the future queen consort of James I of England and VI of Scotland. She was the mother of Prince Henry, the future King Henry Frederick, and six other children. Anne's marriage to James I took place on November 25, 1589, at the Chapel Royal in the Palace of Whitehall, London. This stunning portrait of Anne, taken in 1619, showcases the queen's elegant Elizabethan attire and her fondness for peacock feathers. The motif of the peacock was popular during the Elizabethan era, symbolizing royalty, immortality, and the resurrection of the dead. Anne's fan, adorned with the vibrant and intricately patterned feathers, adds to her regal appearance. Anne's costume, consisting of a voluminous gown, intricately embroidered bodice, and a farthingale, reflects the opulence and grandeur of the Elizabethan period. The rich fabrics, elaborate designs, and intricate details of her attire underscore her status as a queen and the wealth and power of the Tudor and Stuart monarchy. Anne's reign as queen consort of England and Scotland was marked by her patronage of the arts, her support of the Church of England, and her efforts to promote peace between England and Denmark. Despite her popularity and influence, Anne's life was not without tragedy. She lost several children at a young age, and her eldest son, Henry, died in 1612, just a few months after being named heir to the throne. Anne died on March 14, 1619, at the age of 44, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved and influential queen.
