EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print depicts the momentous event of the storming of Magdala on Easter Monday, 1868, during the British Expedition to Abyssinia. The expedition was a punitive measure taken by the British Government in response to King Theodore's imprisonment of British missionaries and representatives. The incident had occurred in December 1867, leading to growing tensions between the two parties. On Good Friday, April 21, 1868, King Theodore's army launched an attack on the British forces, resulting in heavy casualties. In retaliation, the British bombarded Magdala, the capital city of Abyssinia, for several hours. The following Easter Monday, the British forces, led by Sir Robert Napper and Sir Robert Grosvenor, stormed the city, resulting in the capture of King Theodore and the end of the conflict. This print, published by the Illustrated London News, captures the intensity and chaos of the storming of Magdala. British soldiers can be seen advancing through the smoke and debris, while Abyssinian defenders fight back with spears and shields. The print also shows the destruction caused by the bombardment, with buildings in the background reduced to rubble. The Abyssinian Expedition was a significant moment in British colonial history, marking the end of the last major military campaign against an African kingdom. The event was widely reported in the press, and this print provides a vivid and dramatic representation of the storming of Magdala, a turning point in the conflict.
