This evocative photograph captures the 5th Connaught Rangers as they encamped on the Monastir Road, just west of Salonika, in December 1915. Fresh from their successful campaigns in Serbia and Bulgaria during World War 1, the soldiers of the 5th Connaught Rangers are seen here taking a well-deserved rest. The rugged terrain of the camp is a stark contrast to the lush green landscapes they had recently left behind. The 5th Connaught Rangers, part of the British Expeditionary Force, played a significant role in the Balkan Campaign of World War 1. They were among the first British troops to arrive in Salonika in October 1915, and their arrival marked a turning point in the campaign against the Central Powers. The soldiers are seen here in their distinctive uniforms, with the regimental badge of the harp and the motto 'Quis Separabit' (Who Shall Separate Us?) emblazoned on their sleeves. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers during this period.
