Okehampton Castle, nestled in the heart of Devon, England, stands as a testament to the rich history and defensive prowess of medieval England. The castle, established in the late 11th or early 12th century, was a significant Norman fortification designed to protect the borderlands between England and Wales. Its strategic location atop a hill overlooking the River Okement made it an ideal stronghold. The motte, a large man-made mound, served as the foundation for the castle's keep, a tall, rectangular tower that once housed the lord and his family. The bailey, a lower enclosure, provided protection for the castle's inhabitants and accommodated additional structures such as stables, workshops, and living quarters. Despite its impressive size and history, Okehampton Castle has seen its fair share of destruction.
