EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking frontispiece illustrates the opening pages of the Paris Edition of Saxo Grammaticus's seminal work, "Gesta Danorum" (The Danish Chronicle), published in 1514. The Danish historian and chronicler, Saxo Grammaticus, penned this comprehensive account of Danish history from pre-Roman times through to the early 13th century. The image showcases a regal figure, identified as Rex (Latin for king), donning intricately designed armor. The king's stature and the grandeur of his attire symbolize the power and might of the Danish monarchy. The elaborate helmet, adorned with feathers and a cross, further emphasizes the royal status of the figure. The 16th century, during which this edition was published, marked a period of significant cultural and artistic development in Europe. The exquisite woodcut print, with its meticulous attention to detail, is a testament to the artistic prowess of the time. The use of contrasting colors, such as the deep, rich tones of the king's armor against the lighter background, adds depth and dimension to the image. The title of the work, "Gesta Danorum," is inscribed at the bottom of the print, along with the year of publication, 1514. This frontispiece not only serves as an introduction to the historical text but also as a visual representation of the power and prestige of the Danish monarchy during the Middle Ages.
