Irises, 1700s. Creator: Watanabe Shik? (Japanese, 1683-1755)

Irises, 1700s. The subject of this painting comes from a 10th-century text. It tells of a young noblemans journey into the lonely countryside, far from the capital city of Heian-kyo (Kyoto). There he came upon a small stream, the banks of which were covered with blooming irises, on which the artist has chosen to focus our attention. While viewing the beautiful flowers the nobleman composed a poem: I have a beloved wife, Familiar as the skirt of a well-worn robe, And so this distant journeying Fills my heart with grief

Irises, 1700s

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the exquisite artistry of Watanabe Shik?, a renowned Japanese artist from the Edo period. The painting draws inspiration from a 10th-century tale, recounting the journey of a young nobleman who ventured into the tranquil countryside far away from bustling Heian-kyo (Kyoto). As he stumbled upon a serene stream adorned with blooming irises, our attention is captivated by this chosen focal point. The delicate brushstrokes and vibrant colors bring to life these enchanting flowers, inviting us to immerse ourselves in their beauty. It was during this moment of contemplation that the nobleman composed an evocative poem expressing his longing for his beloved wife left behind in distant lands. The juxtaposition of nature's splendor with human emotions creates a poignant narrative within this artwork. This pair of six-panel folding screens captures not only Watanabe Shik?'s mastery but also reflects the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Edo period. Ink and color on gilded paper further enhance its visual appeal, adding depth and sophistication to each stroke. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, "Irises, 1700s" stands as an enduring testament to Watanabe Shik?'s artistic prowess and serves as an emblematic representation of Japanese art history. This remarkable piece invites viewers to appreciate both nature's wonders and the profound emotional connections we forge amidst its grandeur.
