EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the Paymasters car at Blue Creek Station during the construction of the transcontinental railroad in 1865. At that time, there were only 250 workers involved in this massive project. However, by its completion in 1869, the construction forces had grown exponentially to a staggering 10,000 individuals. Remarkably, about one-fourth of these workers were dedicated track layers who tirelessly laid down the railway lines. The remaining workforce consisted of various skilled professionals and laborers such as graders, teamsters, herdsmen, cooks, bakers, blacksmiths bridge builders carpenters masons and clerks. Each day's hard work earned them an average wage of $3 – a decent sum for those times. Interestingly enough, many of these dedicated individuals were Irish immigrants and veterans from the Civil War. Their expertise and determination played a crucial role in connecting our nation through this monumental infrastructure project. In this image captured by Russell Photo and preserved by Archive at TopFoto collection, we witness payday at Blue Creek Station. Two clerks stand proudly in the doorway of the Paymasters car as they distribute hard-earned wages to their fellow workers. This photograph not only showcases an important moment in history but also serves as a testament to the incredible effort put forth by countless individuals who contributed to building America's iconic rail network during its golden age of train travel.
