In this historic photograph, French scientist Pierre Perier (1620-1680) is seen meticulously checking the results of an experiment using Torricelli's barometer on the summit of Puy-de-Dome in France. The image transports us back to the year 1643, when Evangelista Torricelli (1568-1647), an Italian physicist, first devised the earliest form of this revolutionary scientific instrument.
