Steam Ferry from the Bosphorus - Halas

The whole business of Constantinople has historically been linked to the Bosphorus that divides the European side of the city from the Asian side of the city. The traditional way of crossing has been by ferry since earliest times. These steam ferries date from Victorian times and are responsible even to this day for transporting the majority of the workforce from one side of the city to the other. This boat is the Halas, which served in the Royal Navy as HMS Waterwitch, returning to Turkey in 1921 - finally laid up in 1984

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Blast from the Past: The Historic Steam Ferry Halas on the Bosphorus The Bosphorus Strait, a natural waterway that divides Europe and Asia, has been a vital artery for Constantinople, now Istanbul, for centuries. Historically, the traditional means of crossing this iconic waterway has been by ferry, a tradition that dates back to ancient times. This photograph captures the historic steam ferry Halas, which has played a significant role in transporting the city's workforce between the European and Asian sides since the Victorian era. The Halas, a relic from a bygone era, was originally commissioned as HMS Waterwitch for the Royal Navy during the early 20th century. After serving in the military, the vessel was returned to Turkey in 1921 and put to use as a civilian ferry. The Halas continued to ply the waters of the Bosphorus until its retirement in 1984. As you gaze upon this image, you can almost hear the rhythmic chugging of the steam engine and feel the gentle rocking of the boat as it glides through the strait. The Halas, with its distinctive funnel and smokestacks, is a testament to the rich maritime history of Constantinople and the essential role that steam ferries have played in the city's transportation network. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a time when steam-powered vessels ruled the waves and the Bosphorus was a bustling hub of activity. The Halas, with its storied past, stands as a symbol of the enduring connection between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul and the vital role that the Bosphorus has played in shaping the city's history.
