EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the poignant moment of the Spanish garrison's departure from Dunkirk in 1659, an event that marked a significant turning point in the history of the Spanish Netherlands and the ensuing power struggle between France and the Dutch Republic. Dunkirk, a strategically important port city located in the Spanish Netherlands, had been under Spanish rule since the late 15th century. However, as the power dynamics in Europe began to shift, the city found itself at the center of a bitter contest between the Dutch and the French. In the late 17th century, the Spanish garrison in Dunkirk, weary of the ongoing conflict, made the decision to evacuate the city. The Spanish soldiers, seen here in the print, are shown leaving the city in a hasty retreat, with their belongings piled high on their backs and their weapons at the ready. The Dutch, who had long coveted Dunkirk as a key strategic prize, were quick to move in and take control of the city. However, their victory was short-lived as the French, under the leadership of King Louis XIV, also laid claim to the city. The ensuing conflict, known as the War of Devolution, lasted for several years and ultimately ended with the French gaining control of Dunkirk in 1662. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the complex web of alliances and power struggles that characterized European politics in the late 17th century, and the often-bitter consequences of military defeats and territorial disputes. The Spanish garrison's evacuation from Dunkirk was a pivotal moment in the history of the Spanish Netherlands and the wider European power struggle between France and the Dutch Republic. This print offers a glimpse into the past, providing a visual record of a significant historical event and the human drama that accompanied it.
