EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Clinton: A British Military Commander in America during the 18th Century Sir Henry Clinton (1738-1795), a prominent British military figure, is depicted in this historic portrait. Born on January 1, 1738, in London, England, Clinton rose to prominence during the latter half of the 18th century, serving in various capacities in the British military, particularly in North America. Clinton's military career began in 1757 when he joined the 45th Foot Regiment as an ensign. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, fighting in Europe and North America. In 1762, he was promoted to captain and served under General John Forbes during the unsuccessful attempt to capture Fort Duquesne. In 1771, Clinton was appointed governor of New York and served in that capacity until 1773. However, his tenure was cut short when the American Revolution broke out in 1775. Clinton returned to England and was appointed Lieutenant General in 1777, serving under General Sir William Howe during the British occupation of Philadelphia. Clinton's most notable contribution to the war came in 1781 when he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of British forces in America. He led the defense of Yorktown, Virginia, against the combined forces of the Continental Army and French forces under General George Washington and the Comte de Rochambeau. Despite his best efforts, Clinton was unable to prevent the surrender of Lord Cornwallis's army, which effectively ended the war. After the war, Clinton returned to England and was made a Knight of the Bath in 1784. He continued to serve in various military and political capacities until his death on December 23, 1795. This portrait, taken during his time as governor of New York, provides a glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in the history of both Britain and America during the 18th century.
