EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait captures Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton (1803-1873) in the prime of his career, during his tenure as Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1856. Bulwer Lytton was a British statesman, poet, and prolific novelist, whose literary accomplishments were matched by his political acumen. Born in London in 1803, Bulwer Lytton was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, before embarking on a career in politics. He served as Member of Parliament for various constituencies and held several high-ranking positions in the government, including Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies and Secretary of State for the Home Department. However, it was in the realm of literature that Bulwer Lytton truly made his mark. He authored over 100 works, including novels, poems, and plays. Some of his most famous novels, such as "Paul's Case" and "The Coming Race," are considered classics of the Gothic and science fiction genres. Bulwer Lytton's literary style was characterized by his use of vivid imagery, intricate plots, and witty dialogue. He was also known for his coining of the famous opening line, "It was a dark and stormy night." In 1856, Bulwer Lytton was appointed Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, a position he held until 1859. During his time in Glasgow, he delivered several notable speeches and took an active interest in the university's affairs. This portrait, taken in December 1856, captures him in the formal attire of a Scottish academic, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. Bulwer Lytton's legacy as a writer and politician endures to this day. His works continue to be read and studied, and his political insights remain relevant in contemporary debates. This portrait serves as a reminder of a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on both British literature and politics.
