This photograph captures the enigmatic French journalist, Caroline Remy, also known as Dame Guilhard, in the midst of creating one of her renowned political cartoons in 1929. The image, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a rare glimpse into the life of this influential figure in French history. Born in 1855, Caroline Remy began her career as a journalist in the late 19th century, but it was her satirical cartoons that truly brought her fame. Her pen name, Dame Guilhard, was derived from the name of a character in a popular French play, "La Dame aux Camélias," and she used it to sign her biting commentary on the political landscape of the time. The photograph shows Remy intently focused on her work, her expression reflecting the intensity and creativity that went into each of her cartoons.
