EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intense moment of a Roman sacrifice to Apollo before the pivotal Battle of Capua during the Second Punic War. In the year 211 BC, the Romans, led by their consul Publius Cornelius Scipio, prepared to face the formidable Carthaginian army under the command of Hannibal. The Romans believed that by appeasing their god Apollo through a sacred ritual, they would gain his favor and ensure victory in the upcoming battle. The ceremony took place in an open area, with the Romans gathering around a large, ornate altar. The central figure in the scene is a priest, dressed in traditional Roman attire, holding a large, curved knife. He stands over a pristine, white bull, its eyes wide with fear as it senses its impending fate. The smoke from the burning offerings rises into the sky, mingling with the acrid smell of the sacrificial fire. Despite the Romans' deep-rooted faith in their gods, the Battle of Capua did not turn out in their favor. The Carthaginians, led by Hannibal's brilliant military tactics, managed to outmaneuver the Romans and inflict a significant defeat upon them. The Romans, however, did not lose their spirit. They retreated, regrouped, and eventually emerged victorious in the war, which marked a turning point in the Second Punic War. This ancient photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich history and customs of the Romans and their religious beliefs during times of war. The image transports us back to a time when the fate of entire civilizations hung in the balance, and the power of faith and determination played a crucial role in the outcome of battles.
