EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Louis-Philippe-Albert, Comte de Paris (1838-1923), also known as Claimant 82 and Pretender to the French crown, during his later years. Taken in 1894, the image shows the Comte de Paris standing in a garden, holding an umbrella to shield himself from the sun. His attire is that of a gentleman of the late 19th century, with a checked suit, trousers, and a well-groomed beard. Born in Paris, France, in 1838, Louis-Philippe-Albert was the great-grandnephew of King Louis-Philippe I, the last King of France before the Second French Republic. In 1861, at the age of 23, he enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving under General McClellan. He fought in several battles, including the Battle of Antietam, and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, he returned to Europe and continued his pursuit of the French crown. Despite his royal lineage and military experience, Louis-Philippe-Albert's claim to the throne was not recognized by the French government or the majority of the French people. He spent the remainder of his life in exile, traveling between Europe and the United States, and was known for his dedication to preserving the memory of the Bourbon monarchy. This photograph, taken towards the end of his life, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who, despite the challenges and obstacles he faced, remained committed to his cause and his heritage. The use of an umbrella adds an air of elegance and refinement to the image, while the checked suit and trousers reflect the fashion of the time. Overall, this photograph is a fascinating window into the life of a little-known figure in European and American history.
