EDITORS COMMENTS
The Vega (Vegetarian) Restaurant, London WC2: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph takes us back in time to the corner of Whitcomb Street and Panton Street in London's West End, where The Vega (Vegetarian) Restaurant once stood. Opened in 1934 by German emigrants Walter Fliess and his wife Jenny, this establishment became the most renowned vegetarian restaurant in the city. The interior of the restaurant, as depicted in this image, exudes an inviting and cozy atmosphere. With its wooden tables and chairs, the space is warm and inviting, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city outside. The restaurant's address, 56-58 Whitcomb Street, can be seen clearly displayed on the wall, along with the unmistakable sign of a radish and carrot, symbols of the vegetarian cuisine that was served within. The Vega was a popular destination for a diverse range of patrons, including the famous and influential. Among its notable customers were Sir Michael and Lady Redgrave, who were known for their support of vegetarianism and the arts. During the war, Sir Stafford Cripps, a prominent politician, would often be served in the office to avoid drawing attention to himself. Adding to the restaurant's allure were the regular visits from Radio Luxembourg DJ Pete Murray and the Mathe family. The 1940s, as depicted in this photograph, were a time when The Vega thrived, offering a unique dining experience that continues to be remembered and celebrated today. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of The Vega (Vegetarian) Restaurant and the lasting impact it had on London's culinary scene.
