EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, Jeanne de Valois, the first queen of King Louis XII of France, is depicted in regal attire, her expression serene and resolute. Born in 1464 as the daughter of King Louis XI of France, Jeanne was destined for a life of royalty from the very beginning. However, her reign as queen was brief and fraught with controversy. At the age of 15, Jeanne was married to Louis XII in 1476, making her the queen consort of France. The marriage, however, was annulled in 1498 due to consanguinity, or the fact that they were too closely related. Despite the annulment, Jeanne remained in the royal court and continued to play a significant role in French politics. Following the death of King Louis XII in 1515, Jeanne took the veil and entered the monastery of Montmartre in Paris. She spent the remaining years of her life in religious seclusion, dedicating herself to prayer and charitable works. In 1505, she founded the monastery of Saint-Louis-des-Cordieres in Paris, which became a center of learning and spiritual growth. Jeanne de Valois was canonized as a saint in 1669, and is now revered as Saint Jeanne de Valois. Her life is a testament to the resilience and strength of women in the face of adversity, and her legacy continues to inspire generations. This portrait captures the essence of her regal bearing and the inner strength that sustained her through the trials and tribulations of her life.
