EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the daily life of an Ethiopian woman as she grinds corn using a traditional saddle quern, a labor-intensive process that has been a staple of Ethiopian farming and food preparation for centuries. Dressed in a simple, flowing garment, the woman sits on a low stool, her legs crossed in front of her. In her hands, she holds a large sack of freshly harvested corn, which she feeds into the top of the quern. The quern, made of two large, rough-surfaced stones, is supported by a wooden saddle, which rests on her lap. The grinding process is slow and methodical, requiring great physical strength and patience. As the woman turns the upper stone with her hands, the corn is crushed between the stones, releasing its kernels from the husks. The ground corn is then collected in a nearby pot or jar, ready to be cooked into a variety of Ethiopian dishes, such as injera, a staple flatbread, or kitfo, a spiced raw beef dish. This photograph, taken in 1868, offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural traditions of Ethiopia, a country known for its ancient civilization and unique agricultural practices. The image also highlights the important role of women in Ethiopian society, who have long been responsible for the majority of farming and food preparation tasks. In the background of the image, we see the simple, rustic surroundings of a rural Ethiopian village, with thatched-roof huts and smoke rising from cooking fires. A young child peeks curiously from one of the huts, adding a sense of warmth and humanity to the scene. This powerful image not only captures the beauty and resilience of the Ethiopian people, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving traditional farming practices and cultural heritage.
