EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Edward Earl of Dorset, also known as Edward Sackville (1591-1652), a prominent military commander during the English Civil War. Dorset's military career began under King James I, but he gained particular distinction during the Battle of Edgehill in 1642, which marked the beginning of the First English Civil War. The Battle of Edgehill took place on October 23, 1642, near the village of Edgehill in Warwickshire. The Royalist forces, led by King Charles I and the Earl of Essex, faced off against the Parliamentarian army under the command of the Earl of Manchester and Sir John Hampden. Dorset, as a Royalist commander, played a crucial role in the battle, leading the right wing of the Royalist army. The print, produced by the renowned Dutch engraver Cornelis Dyck (or Dyk) in the mid-17th century, showcases Dorset in his military regalia, holding a quill pen and an open book. The inscription below the image reads, "Antho. Dorset. Earl of Dorset. Autograph." This suggests that the print may have been intended as a collector's item, showcasing the Earl's signature as a historical relic. Dorset's military prowess and leadership were essential to the Royalist cause during the early stages of the civil war. However, his fortunes would eventually turn, and he was captured by the Parliamentarians in 1643. He was later released and continued to serve the King until his death in 1652. This print serves as a testament to Dorset's military career and his place in English history.
