This evocative photograph captures a moment of joy and happiness in the lives of The Duke and Duchess of Kent and their eldest children, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (b. 1935), and Princess Alexandra (b. 1936), taken in the late 1930s. The Duke, the fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary, is seen here with his charming wife, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (1906-1968). The Duke's warm smile and the playful expressions of his children add to the sense of familial bliss. Tragically, this idyllic scene was short-lived. Just weeks after the birth of their third child, Prince Michael of Kent (b. 1942), the Duke was killed in a plane crash in August 1942, on his way to Iceland to serve as Governor-General. The Duke's tragic demise at the age of 40 cast a long shadow over the lives of his wife and children.
