This striking 19th century photograph captures the Duke of Cambridge, George William Frederick Charles (1819-1904), in a formal portrait wearing his full military regalia. As the 2nd Duke of Cambridge and a grandson of King George III, he held an esteemed position in British royalty during the Victorian era. The Duke's dignified demeanor and well-groomed beard add to the historical significance of the image. Born on February 27, 1819, George William Frederick Charles was the eldest son of Adolphus, 1st Duke of Cambridge, and Princess Augusta of Hesse and by Rhine. He joined the British Army in 1835 and served in various military campaigns, including the Crimean War. In 1850, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, a position he held until 1856. In 1857, he was appointed as the Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of India, serving until 1862. During his time in India, he oversaw the suppression of the Indian Mutiny and was knighted as a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India and a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire. Upon his return to England, he was appointed as the Master-General of the Ordnance and later became the Constable of the Tower of London in 1885. The Duke of Cambridge passed away on October 25, 1904, leaving behind a rich legacy as a noble military leader and a prominent figure in British royalty during the Victorian era. This photograph, taken in 1904, provides a rare glimpse into the life of this historic figure and his distinguished military career.
