EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the spirit of camaraderie and survival among the heroes of the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. The Balaklava Banquet, as it came to be known, was held in honor of the survivors of the infamous charge on October 25, 1854. The gathering took place at the British military camp in Balaklava, Crimea, and brought together Major General de Salis of the 8th Hussars, Lieut. Colonel Mussenden, Colonel Seager, and various other officers and soldiers from the 8th Hussars, 17th Lancers, and Royal Horse Artillery. Prominently featured in this portrait are Major General de Salis, Colonel Seager, and Colonel Mussenden, all of whom played crucial roles in leading their men during the charge. Also present are EH Woodham of the 17th Lancers, Corporal Campbell of the 13th Hussars, Trumpet-Major Harry Joy of the 17th Lancers, Sergeant Lethbridge of the Royal Horse Artillery, and several other sergeants and corporals from the various regiments. The Charge of the Light Brigade was a daring and disastrous cavalry charge during the Battle of Balaklava on October 25, 1854. The British forces, led by Lord Raglan, were ordered to attack a Russian artillery battery, but due to miscommunication, they charged into the wrong position and were met with heavy Russian fire. Despite the odds, a small group of survivors managed to make it back to their own lines, and the Balaklava Banquet was organized to celebrate their bravery and resilience. This engraving, created in 1875, serves as a poignant reminder of the heroism and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the Crimean War. The image captures the essence of the human spirit in the face of adversity and the importance of camaraderie and unity in times of crisis.
