Chevalier d'Eon: The Enigmatic French Freemason and Transvestite (1728-1810) This image depicts the enigmatic French figure, Chevalier d'Eon, in the year 1768, as he is shown here as a respected member of the Freemasons. Born as Charles Genevieve Louis Auguste Andre Timothee in 1728, d'Eon's life was a fascinating blend of adventure, intrigue, and defiance of societal norms. Born as a man, d'Eon claimed to have been sent by King Louis XV of France to serve as a diplomat in the Ottoman Empire. While in Constantinople, d'Eon claimed to have been captured and held for several years, during which time they were allegedly forced to live as a woman. Upon their return to France, d'Eon continued to live as a woman, adopting the name Madame d'Eon de Beaumont. Despite the controversy surrounding their gender identity, d'Eon gained the favor of the French court and was even granted a pension by King Louis XV. In 1762, d'Eon was sent as a diplomat to the Court of St. James's in London, where they were received with great curiosity and intrigue. This image, taken in 1768, shows d'Eon as a respected member of the Freemasons, a secretive society that promoted social and moral values. The Freemasons, with their emphasis on brotherhood, equality, and personal growth, provided a welcoming space for d'Eon, who defied the rigid gender roles of the time. Throughout their life, d'Eon continued to defy societal norms, living openly as a woman while maintaining their diplomatic and military careers. Their story remains a fascinating chapter in the history of gender identity and the complexities of French society during the 18th century.
