EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles VII, also known as Charles the Victorious, triumphantly enters Paris on July 17, 1437, marking the end of the Hundred Years War and the beginning of the House of Valois reign in France. In this historic moment, Charles, dressed in full armor and wearing the fleur-de-lis on his helmet, rides his horse through the city gates, surrounded by his loyal soldiers and citizens who have come out to welcome their new king. The crowd cheers and throws flowers in his path, symbolizing the hope and renewal that comes with the end of a long and devastating conflict. The Hundred Years War, which began in 1337, was a series of battles between England and France for control of the French throne. The war had left France in ruins, with many cities and towns destroyed and the population decimated. When Charles, who had been living in exile in the Loire Valley, was recognized as the rightful king of France in 1429, he set out to reclaim his throne and restore peace to his country. With the help of Joan of Arc, who led the French army to several crucial victories, Charles was able to lay siege to Paris and ultimately enter the city as its rightful ruler. The event was a turning point in French history, marking the end of English influence in France and the beginning of a new era of French rule. This print, depicting Charles VII's entry into Paris, is a testament to the power and determination of a monarch who was able to unite his people and restore order to his kingdom after years of war and strife. It is a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of France, and the importance of perseverance and leadership in times of crisis.
