This historic photograph captures the moment of discovery as English explorer Sir Francis Drake, represented here by his renowned contemporary and fellow seafarer Sir Thomas Cavendish, sails his ship through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Magellan in 1586. Named after the famous Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who first navigated these waters in 1520, the straits connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and have long been a source of fascination and challenge for mariners. Cavendish, who set sail from England in 1586 with a fleet of five ships, aimed to circumnavigate the globe in search of fame, fortune, and new territories for Queen Elizabeth I. After a long and arduous journey, he became the second Englishman to complete a circumnavigation, following in the footsteps of Drake who had accomplished the feat just a decade earlier. The image depicts Cavendish's ship bravely cutting through the waves, with the rugged coastline of South America in the background. The crew, clad in period attire, can be seen working diligently to keep the vessel on course as they navigate the narrow and unpredictable waters of the straits.
