In this harrowing image from 1932, the Akron, a massive airship of its time, is seen suddenly taking to the air, carrying three men with it. The cause of the lift was unexpected, and for two of the men, the experience proved fatal. One man, seen in the foreground, managed to save himself by clinging to a rope that had been attached to the ship. But his companions, who were likely working on the exterior of the Akron when the incident occurred, were not so fortunate. They plummeted approximately 200 meters to their deaths. The exact reason for the Akron's unexpected ascent remains unclear, but it is believed that a sudden gust of wind or a technical malfunction may have been to blame. This tragic accident served as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in airship travel and construction, and marked a dark chapter in the history of airship technology.
