Straw hats return to favour, 1930, (1933). Workers at a milliners with piles of straw boaters. Luton, the centre of the straw hat industry, had suffered from lean years since 1914; khaki was the wear of choice until 1918 and felt hats were the only fashionable summer headgear until 1930, when Edward, the Prince of Wales re-activated the fashion for the straw boater by wearing one. These hats were popular at summer events such as the Henley Regatta, and were also worn by boys at Eton public school. From " The Pageant of the Century". [Odhams Press Ltd, 1933]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Straw hats return to favour, 1930" takes us back to a significant moment in fashion history. The image showcases workers at a milliners in Luton, the heart of the straw hat industry during the early 20th century. After enduring lean years since World War I, where khaki was the preferred choice and felt hats dominated summer headgear trends, a revival occurred in 1930. The catalyst for this resurgence was none other than Edward, the Prince of Wales himself. By donning a stylish straw boater, he single-handedly reactivated its popularity among fashionable individuals. These iconic hats became synonymous with summer events like the prestigious Henley Regatta and were even worn by boys attending Eton public school. In this snapshot frozen in time, piles of straw boaters fill every corner of the milliners' shop as workers diligently carry out their tasks. It's fascinating to witness how one individual's fashion choice could have such an immense impact on an entire industry. As we delve into "The Pageant of the Century" published by Odhams Press Ltd in 1933, we are reminded that fashion has always played a pivotal role in society. This print not only captures an era but also serves as a testament to how trends can be revived through influential figures and shape cultural preferences for generations to come.
