EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity and chaos of the Battle of Rorke's Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The photograph, taken from the collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts Lieutenant Melvill (left) and Sergeant Coghill (right) of the 2/24th Regiment, attempting to cut their way through the thick Zulu lines with their horse. The Battle of Rorke's Drift took place on January 22, 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu War, which saw the British Empire clash with the Zulu Kingdom in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The scene portrayed in this photograph is a pivotal moment in the battle, as the outnumbered British forces, who were defending the mission station at Rorke's Drift, were under relentless attack from the Zulu army. Melvill and Coghill, with their horse, were making a desperate attempt to break through the Zulu lines and bring much-needed reinforcements to their comrades. The Battle of Rorke's Drift is considered one of the most heroic actions in British military history. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the British forces managed to repel the Zulu attacks and hold their ground until reinforcements arrived. The battle resulted in 17 Victoria Crosses being awarded to the defenders, the most for any single engagement in the British Army's history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the fierce fighting that took place during the Anglo-Zulu War and the bravery and determination of the soldiers involved. The image also highlights the cultural clash between the European and African forces, with the horse and the traditional Zulu shields and spears creating a stark contrast. Overall, this photograph is an important historical record of a significant moment in the history of South Africa.
