EDITORS COMMENTS
Decades have passed since the fateful day of December 7, 1941, when the Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This haunting image captures the aftermath of the destruction, specifically the wreckage of the USS West Virginia (BB-48), which lies submerged on the harbor's sea bed. The USS West Virginia was a 12,700-ton battleship commissioned in 1921 and was part of the US Pacific Fleet's Battleship Division 1. On that infamous morning, the West Virginia was moored at berth F-6, and at 8:45 am, she was struck by two torpedoes from Japanese submarines. The impact caused a massive explosion that sank the battleship, taking the lives of 106 crew members. The photograph, taken in 1943, shows the West Virginia's decimated hull, with its once proud superstructure now a twisted mass of metal and debris. The image is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the US Navy. The 21st century has seen the wreck of the USS West Virginia become an important historical site, attracting divers and researchers from around the world. The image serves as a powerful testament to the events of that day and the indelible mark it left on world history. This photograph, from the International Newsreel (INL) collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, is a poignant and evocative reminder of the past. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by the crew of the USS West Virginia and the other ships sunk or damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The image also serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the American people in the face of adversity.
