EDITORS COMMENTS
William III and Mary II, the joint monarchs of England, Scotland, and Ireland, accept the English Bill of Rights during their coronation ceremony at Whitehall Palace on February 13, 1689. This historic moment marked the Glorious Revolution, which brought an end to the reign of James II and the establishment of a new constitutional monarchy. The Bill of Rights, presented to the new rulers by Parliament, guaranteed the supremacy of Parliament over the monarch, freedom from Catholic influence, and protection against arbitrary imprisonment and excessive taxes. William and Mary's acceptance of the Bill of Rights signified their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of their subjects. William III, a Dutch prince, had invaded England in 1688 with the support of a coalition of Protestant European powers, seeking to depose James II due to his Catholic sympathies and perceived tyranny. Mary II, James II's daughter, joined William in his campaign and became his co-ruler upon their victory. The coronation ceremony took place in the Chapel Royal at Whitehall Palace, where the new monarchs were anointed, crowned, and robed in their regalia. The occasion was a grand spectacle, attended by nobles, ambassadors, and other dignitaries, as well as thousands of Londoners who gathered to witness the historic event. This photograph print, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures a poignant moment in English history, as William III and Mary II accept the Bill of Rights, symbolizing the beginning of a new era of constitutional monarchy and the protection of individual rights and freedoms.
