EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating portrait, we behold the viscountess Castlereagh, née Romaine Combe, a striking figure of 1930s high society. Born to Major Boyce Combe of Dockenfield, Surrey, Romaine's distinctly middle-class origins did not deter the 8th Marquis of Londonderry from proposing marriage in 1931. Despite the opposition and societal scrutiny, the couple's union was blessed with three children, including Annabel Goldsmith, the mother of Jemima Khan. The viscountess's exquisite beauty is on full display in this photograph, as she gazes serenely at the camera with an air of refinement and poise. Her elegant attire, with its intricate beading and flowing fabric, accentuates her slender figure and graceful posture. The delicate pearls at her neck and the intricate brooch at her chest add a touch of sophistication and elegance to her ensemble. The 1930s were a time of glamour and opulence, and the viscountess embodies the essence of this era. Her marriage to the Marquis of Londonderry marked her entry into the upper echelons of society, and she quickly became a fixture in the London social scene. Despite the challenges and criticisms that came with her unconventional background, Romaine proved to be a gracious and beloved member of society, leaving a lasting legacy as the viscountess Castlereagh. This portrait serves as a reminder of a bygone era, a time when elegance, beauty, and grace were the defining qualities of high society. It is a testament to the power of love and determination, and a reminder that societal expectations should not dictate one's happiness or worth. The viscountess Castlereagh's story continues to inspire and captivate, a beacon of strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
