EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the original seven astronauts of NASA's Project Mercury program, who were selected in 1959 to become the first Americans in space. Seated in the front row from left to right are Wally Schirra, Deke Slayton, John Glenn, and Scott Carpenter. In the top row, from left to right, are Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and Virgil "Gus" Grissom. Project Mercury was the United States' first manned space program, which was initiated in response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik 1 in October 1957. The astronauts in this photograph underwent rigorous training to prepare for suborbital and orbital spaceflights. Shepard became the first American in space with his suborbital flight on May 5, 1959, aboard Freedom 7. Grissom flew the second suborbital mission on July 21, 1959, aboard Liberty Bell 7. Schirra, Slayton, Glenn, Carpenter, Shepard, and Grissom all went on to fly orbital missions. Schirra flew Sigma 7 on October 3, 1962, becoming the fifth American to orbit the Earth. Slayton, who was grounded due to a heart condition, became the flight director for the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, which carried John Glenn into orbit on February 20, 1962. Carpenter flew Aurora 7 on May 24, 1962, becoming the second American to orbit the Earth. This photograph is a significant piece of 20th-century history, capturing the pioneering spirit of the first American astronauts as they embarked on a new era of space exploration. The astronauts are dressed in their iconic white space suits and helmets, ready for their historic missions. The date on the photograph is January 1961, marking the beginning of this groundbreaking period in human history.
