EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Phil Christoph Konigsmark (1665-1694), a Swedish soldier and the passionate lover of Sophia Dorothea of Celle, the unfortunate queen consort of George I, King of England. The image captures the intensity of their clandestine relationship, which began in 1687 when they met in Celle, Germany, while Sophia was still married to her first husband, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg. Philip, a brave and skilled soldier, was a member of the Swedish army garrisoned in Celle. He and Sophia fell deeply in love, and their secret liaison continued for several years, despite the disapproval of Sophia's family and the efforts of her husband to keep them apart. In 1693, the situation came to a head when Sophia's brother, Duke Frederick Augustus, discovered their affair and forced Sophia to be confined to a convent in Ahlden. Philip, desperate to be with his beloved, hatched a plan to rescue her. He managed to escape from the Swedish army and, with the help of some loyal friends, attempted to abduct Sophia from the convent. However, the plan went awry, and they were both captured and imprisoned. This print, created in the early 18th century, likely reflects the romanticized version of their story that circulated in Europe at the time. The image of Phil Christoph Konigsmark as a gallant soldier and devoted lover no doubt appealed to the public's fascination with the scandalous affair and the tragic fate of Sophia Dorothea. Despite the historical inaccuracies and embellishments, the print remains a poignant reminder of the passionate love affair that captivated Europe in the late 17th century.
