Palace of Prince George - Chania, Crete
Palace of Prince George - Chania, Crete. Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected and a national government was set up, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George, was made High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tranquil atmosphere of the Palace of Prince George in Chania, Crete, circa 1900. Amidst the tumultuous history of Crete's annexation from Ottoman rule, the Palace served as the headquarters for the High Commissioner, Prince George, who was appointed by the Great Powers to maintain peace and order on the island following the Greek annexation in 1897. The division of Crete among British, French, Russian, and Italian forces had resulted in a delicate balance of power, necessitating a strong and impartial presence. The Palace, situated in the Halepa district of Chania, was a symbol of the uneasy peace that prevailed during this period. The sentries, standing tall and alert in their boxes, kept a watchful eye over the palace grounds, their determined expressions conveying a sense of duty and commitment to maintaining order. The peaceful scene is further emphasized by the serene surroundings, with the clear blue sky and lush greenery providing a stark contrast to the military presence. The Palace of Prince George was a crucial part of the administrative structure established by the Great Powers to govern Crete during this transitional period. The joint Muslim-Christian assembly, which was part-elected and part-appointed, functioned under the watchful eye of the High Commissioner to ensure a peaceful coexistence between the different communities on the island. Despite the political complexities and tensions that marked this era, the Palace of Prince George stands as a testament to the efforts made to keep the peace and pave the way for a brighter future for Crete and its people.
