EDITORS COMMENTS
I Capuleti e i Montecchi" (The Capulets and the Montagues), also known as "La Sonnambula" (The Sleepwalker). The opera, first performed in 1830, is a passionate retelling of the Shakespearean tale of Romeo and Juliet, set against the backdrop of feuding families in 16th-century Italy. In this scene, Climene, portrayed by the renowned soprano Giuseppina Grassi (1812-1899), is shown in her bridal chamber, surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting. Her heart, however, is heavy with the knowledge that her beloved Faone (tenor), played by the acclaimed Enrico Tamberlik (1817-1892), still harbors deep affection for their mutual rival, Saffo (mezzo-soprano), portrayed here by the legendary Giuseppina Strepponi (1815-1897). The tension between Faone's love for Saffo and his duty to Climene, as well as the bitter enmity between their respective families, forms the core of this tragic opera. The image of Climene preparing for her wedding, with a melancholic expression on her face, underscores the heartache and turmoil that lies beneath the surface of this historic performance. The photograph, taken in the late 1800s, features the famous opera singers Adelina Patti as Climene, Enrico Caruso as Faone, and Emma Calvé as Saffo. The image is a testament to the enduring power of Bellini's opera and the timeless nature of its themes, which continue to resonate with audiences today." This photo print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich history of opera and the emotional depth of Bellini's masterpiece, "I Capuleti e i Montecchi." The image captures the essence of the opera's tragic love story and the intense emotions that have captivated audiences for generations.
