Monument to First Chinese Regiment at Weihai

Monument to the (British) First Chinese Regiment at Weihai in Shandong Province, Peoples Republic of China. Between 1898-1930, the town was a British colony. The United Kingdom obtained a lease for Weihai (Wei Hai Wei) which was to exist for as long as the Russians leased Port Arthur on the opposite shore. During 1899, administration was transferred to a military and civil commissioner appointed by the War Office in London. The territorial garrison consisted of 200 British troops and a specially constituted Chinese Regiment with British officers. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Monument to the First Chinese Regiment at Weihai, a poignant reminder of the colonial history between China and the United Kingdom. Located in the Shandong Province of the People's Republic of China, Weihai was a British colony from 1898 to 1930, with a lease granted by the Qing Dynasty as part of the Boxer Protocol. The town was administered by a military and civil commissioner appointed by the War Office in London, and its territorial garrison consisted of 200 British troops and a specially constituted Chinese Regiment with British officers. This regiment, known as the 1st Chinese Regiment, was stationed at Weihai to maintain order and protect British interests in the neutral zone between the British and Russian colonies of Weihai and Port Arthur, respectively. The inscription on the monument reads, "Erected by the British Government in memory of the Chinese soldiers who served in the First Chinese Regiment at Weihai Wei from 1899 to 1900." The image shows a lone Chinese soldier standing before the monument, a fence separating him from the British colonial station behind him. This powerful image encapsulates the complex history of colonialism, neutrality, and cultural exchange between China and the United Kingdom during this period.
