EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the stern gaze of Admiral Sir Max Kennedy Horton, GCB, DSO (1883-1951), a renowned British naval officer who made significant contributions to the British Navy during both World War I and World War II. Horton began his naval career as a submariner, serving in the First World War and commanding the submarine HMS E12. His bravery and successes in the submarine service earned him the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). In the latter half of World War II, Horton rose through the ranks to become the Commander-in-Chief of the Western Approaches. In this role, he oversaw the defense of the Atlantic sea lanes against German U-boats, a critical mission that helped ensure the safe passage of vital supplies to the UK and its allies. Horton's leadership and strategic acumen were instrumental in turning the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic. This photograph, taken in 1951, shows Horton in his full admiral's uniform, adorned with his many decorations and medals. The image conveys a sense of authority, experience, and determination, reflecting the indomitable spirit of a great naval leader. The photograph is a testament to Horton's remarkable naval career and his enduring legacy in the history of the British Navy.
