Knossos - Crete - Large storage jars
The excavations of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos revealed a remarkable set of large Minoan storage jars, or pithoi. The compartments in the floor were for grain and produce. An alternative explanation for these compartments is that they were catch basins for the contents of the pithoi if one should break or leak. It would be very hazardous to store grain or produce in the floor of a magazine, the main purpose of which was to hold giant vases of liquids

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intrigue and mystery of the ancient Minoan civilization, as revealed through the groundbreaking excavations of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos, Crete. The large Minoan storage jars, or pithoi, depicted in this image are a remarkable testament to the advanced engineering and organizational skills of the Minoans. The compartments in the floor of the magazine, where these jars were discovered, were originally believed to have been used for storing grain and produce. However, an alternative explanation suggests that they may have served as catch basins to prevent any spills or leaks from the giant vases. The intricate decorations on the pithoi showcase the rich artistic heritage of the Minoans, whose civilization flourished on the island of Crete from approximately 2600 to 1400 BC. This historical photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the people of Knossos skillfully managed their resources and preserved their culture through their impressive pottery.
