Born on November 19, 1639, in Florence, Italy, Lully was a prolific and influential figure in the world of Baroque music. By the age of 12, he had already begun his musical training, and by 1661, he had arrived in France, where he would spend the rest of his life. The kitchen setting of this photograph is significant, as Lully's career began not as a composer, but as a court musician and dance master. He would often accompany the royal family and their guests during meals, providing music to entertain and delight.
