EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the majesty of the Imperial, a steamship that once held the title of the world's largest vessel when she was launched in 1912. The Imperial was a liner of the Hamburg-Amerika Line, measuring an impressive 852 feet in length and capable of carrying over 3,500 passengers. The Imperial made history with her maiden voyage from Hamburg, Germany to New York City in the United States, a journey that spanned an impressive 7 days. However, her reign as the largest ship in the world was short-lived, as she made only one crossing before the outbreak of World War I in 1914. During the war, the Imperial was seized by the British Admiralty and put into service as a transport ship for troops and supplies. She was later renamed the Cunarder Berengaria and continued to serve in this capacity until the end of the war. Despite her military service, the Imperial's grandeur and size remained unchanged. In this photograph, we can see her towering smokestacks and intricate deck details, which would have once been adorned with luxurious amenities for her wealthy passengers. The Imperial's story is a testament to the historical significance of ocean liners in the early 20th century, and this photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era of maritime travel. With her impressive size and storied history, the Imperial remains an iconic symbol of the golden age of steamships.
