EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures King George I of Greece (1863-1913) in his official regal attire, adorned with numerous medals and orders, during his visit to Thessaloniki (then known as Salonica or Thessalonica) in the early 20th century. King George I, who reigned from 1863 until his assassination in Thessaloniki in 1913, is depicted here wearing the Grand Cross of the Order of the Redeemer, the highest decoration in the Greek Order of Chivalry, as well as other distinguished military and civilian honors. The sash of the Order of the Redeemer is draped across his chest, adding an air of grandeur and authority to the image. The photograph was taken during a time when Thessaloniki was a significant cultural and economic center of the Ottoman Empire, and was later annexed by Greece in 1912. King George I's visit to the city was an important moment in Greek history, as it marked the beginning of the Greek occupation and eventual integration of Thessaloniki into the Greek state. The King's moustache, a distinctive feature of his appearance, is prominently displayed in this image, adding to the historical significance of the photograph. The photograph also serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent political climate of the time, as King George I was assassinated just a few months after this photograph was taken, on March 18, 1913, in Thessaloniki's Sarafandas Square. This photograph is a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in Greek history and the reign of King George I.
