EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph, taken on March 22, 1894, captures a significant moment in the political landscape of Europe as German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) is warmly welcomed by Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) during a state visit to the German Imperial Palace in Berlin. The handshake between the two men, depicted on this print from Mary Evans Picture Library (Page 39), marked a turning point in their relationship, which had been strained due to Bismarck's liberal political leanings and Wilhelm's desire for a more authoritarian rule. Bismarck, known as the "Iron Chancellor" for his strong leadership and diplomatic skills, had played a crucial role in unifying Germany and establishing the German Empire in 1871. However, as the years passed, he became increasingly unpopular among conservative elements within the German political establishment, and Wilhelm saw an opportunity to assert his power by dismissing Bismarck. The carpet in the foreground of the image adds a sense of grandeur and importance to the scene, while the red backdrop of the room emphasizes the power and authority of the German monarchy. The photograph, taken by renowned German photographer Wilhelm von Röhl (1854-1933), provides a fascinating glimpse into the political dynamics of late 19th-century Europe and the complex relationship between Bismarck and Wilhelm II.
